2022 NBA Summer League: Top 3 teams to watch

As we wind down from the NBA draft, the 2022 summer league is right around the corner. We get a first glimpse to watch some of the top draft picks play at a semi-NBA level. The Las Vegas Summer League starts on July 7th, so teams are still manufacturing their rosters but here are the top 3 teams to watch so far.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Piston’s summer league roster will include basically their starting lineup from last last season, all of their 2022 NBA draft picks, and several other hungry prospects.

Saddiq Bey, Cade Cunningham, and Isaiah Stewart are listed on the summer league roster but will likely see little to no minutes. They were arguably their top 3 players last season, it would do more harm than good if they played. Detroit has a significant chance to win the summer league if they do choose to play, having their 22-23 projected starting lineup on their roster.

The most notable player to watch will be the Piston’s 5th pick in the 2022 NBA draft Jaden Ivey. Jaden will likely get a lot of playing time with piston’s point guard Killian Hayes, who is desperate to show he can be a consistent player in the NBA. Isiah Livers should also get heavy minutes after missing most of last season with a foot injury.

Some summer league sleepers that could make some noise on this Piston’s team are the Syracuse Boeheim brothers. Buddy Boeheim recently signed a two-way contract with the Pistons but Jimmy Boeheim is only signed to the summer league team. It will be interesting to watch both players play man-to-man defense, after watching them play in their father’s infamous 2-3 defense at Syracuse.

Portland Trailblazers

The Trailblazer’s summer league roster will showcase the #7 pick in the 2022 NBA draft, Shaedon Sharpe. Shaedon sees himself as being one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball. With only high school level experience to go off of, Sharpe will have a chance to show everyone he has the most talent in the NBA draft.

The most notable player to watch on the Trailblazer’s summer league team besides Shaedon will be their #57 2022 NBA draft pick Jabari Walker. Jabari is known for his high energy defense, rebounding, and floor spacing threes. He will look to the summer league to show he can create his own shot and finish through contact being an undersized forward in the NBA.

Big men, Luke Garza and Trendon Walker will likely see a lot of playing time in the summer league. With the Trailblazers roster in need of big men, both players will be pushing to show they can contribute at a high level and make the final roster.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have yet to release their official 2022 summer league roster but it’s safe to say it will feature all of their 2022 NBA draft picks. The most notable being the #2 pick Chet Holmgren. Chet will fit nicely with Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the starting lineup and will use the 2022 summer league to show why he was the #2 pick.

The most notable player to watch on OKC’s summer league team besides Chet will be Ousmane Dieng. The thunder sent three protected first round picks to move up in the draft and pick Ousmane, it’s safe to say they are confident in his abilities. The 19 year old forward has great potential, showing impressive playmaking skills for being 6’10. While still a raw prospect, his size gives him the potential to be an elite defender in the NBA. Ousmane will have the opportunity to show he has the intangibles that will keep him in this league for a long time.

OKC’s #12 and #34 picks Jalen Williams and Jaylin Williams will likely see a lot of playing time and will need nicknames immediately if they share the floor together. Jalen is known for his scoring and rebounding averaging 18.3 points and 4.4 rebounds but was in weak conference at Santa Clara University. Jaylin is an unbelievable athlete known for his phenomenal defense but poor shooing, hitting 23.9% from 3 last season. Both will look to show they belong at this years summer league.
